A flamboyant bunch of 14 sailors headed out to Evanston, IL
this past weekend to take on various teams in the MCSA that included Wisconsin,
Minnesota, Illinois, Chicago and Purdue. Packed tightly into three cars, we
headed out Friday night with an itching to sail. Rising bright and early on
Saturday morning, we took to Northwestern’s boathouse on Lake Michigan, rigged
up the two boats we towed, and headed out on the water. We had three boats
sailing in both A and B divisions. Conditions were moderate with a warm breeze
coming from the southwest. Gusts up to 20 knots provided for an exciting sail,
but we hadn’t gotten more than one rotation in before a thunderstorm rolled in,
causing about a two-hour delay. Once the storm had passed, we packed another
rotation in before the sun had set. Unfortunately, severe wind conditions
prevented any sailing on Sunday, so after awards we were on our way back to the
mitten. Thanks to Matt Graham (’13) skippering in A division and Ryan Seago
(’14) skippering B division, the University of Michigan Sailing Team was able
to take first overall and first in both divisions. It was a successful weekend
for UofM as they dominated Northwestern both on the football field and on the
water. Sail to the victors!
